TGL is an independent not-for-profit organisation that uses evidence and expert groups to provide health professionals with reliable and independent therapeutic information to help them make the best decisions for their patients. Guidelines are written principally for prescribers to provide them with clear, practical, succinct and up-to-date therapeutic information for a range of diseases. TGL has partnered with the Australian General Practice Research Foundation since 2011 to support research in general practice.
Grant details
Grant amount: One grant valued at $100,000 (excluding GST).
Funding period: 18 months
Focus areas: Research supported through this grant must be relevant to general practice and aligned with the overarching aim of improving the quality use of medicines, including the use, implementation or translation of evidence-based clinical guidance.
Applications may address a wide range of research questions and approaches, including (but not limited to) research that explores:
- how evidence, guidelines or therapeutic recommendations are interpreted and applied in general practice
- factors that influence prescribing decisions and medicine use in real-world primary care settings
- strategies to support evidence-informed clinical decision-making or reduce evidence-practice gaps
- opportunities to improve translation of research or guideline-informed care into everyday practice
Applications that demonstrate potential to inform or influence clinical guidelines, or support their effective use in practice, will be highly regarded.
These examples are not intended to limit the scope of eligible research.
Objective: This grant supports high-quality, GP-led research that contributes to improving the quality use of medicines in general practice, with a particular focus on the use, implementation and translation of evidence-based clinical guidelines.
The grant is intended to support early-mid career researchers in general practice to undertake rigorous, practice-relevant research that generates insights with clear potential for translation into everyday clinical care, education, policy, or system-level improvement.
Research is expected to be designed with a clear line of sight to impact, including how findings could inform guideline use, support clinical decision-making, or improve prescribing quality in Australian general practice.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this grant, the principal investigator must:
- be a general practitioner or general practice registrar,
- be an early-mid career researcher, AND
- have an active leadership role in the project and sufficient experience in leading and conducting research to ensure its successful completion.
Selection criteria
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:
- Scientific quality of the proposed research project (30%)
The project should demonstrate strong scientific foundations, including a clear research question, robust methodology, and sound approach to data collection and analysis, with appropriate consideration of the populations and contexts relevant to general practice. - Likelihood for translation and impact in general practice services (30%)
The project should showcase potential for practical, meaningful, and scalable outcomes that improve patient care and/or healthcare systems, including consideration of patient, carer, or community needs and experiences where relevant. - Innovation and originality of the project (15%)
The project should demonstrate originality in its approach, incorporating innovative ideas to address identified unmet needs or gaps in general practice research. - Feasibility of the project (15%)
The project must be realistic and achievable within the given timeline, budget, and resources, supported by a clear research plan and the necessary expertise and support to ensure successful completion. - Contribution to building research capacity in general practice services (10%)
The project should enhance research capacity within general practice, whether through skill development, training, fostering collaborations, or expanding networks.
Requirements for successful applicants
Successful applicants will be required to:
- formally accept the grant and enter into a Grant Agreement with the administering organisation
- participate in a short interview with the Foundation
- meet key project milestones, including reporting requirements, with payments linked to specified milestones
- acknowledge the support of the Foundation and funding partner in relevant outputs

Application process
Applications open Monday 11 May 2026 at 9:00am (AEST) and close Monday 22 June 2026 at 9:00am (AEST). Applicants will be notified of outcomes on Friday 11 September 2026.
